Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is no longer number one in the film world. Instead, Amazon Prime Video’s new film Role Play has taken the top spot. Here’s everything you need to know about this new action-comedy starring Kaley Cuoco.
The New Leader: Amazon Prime’s Role Play
Netflix achieved significant streaming success with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. However, Eddie Murphy’s comeback has been outperformed by a new action-comedy: Role Play. Recently launched on Amazon Prime Video, this film is gaining immense popularity among viewers. According to JustWatch, Role Play is currently the most popular film among audiences. It has outshined not only Beverly Hills Cop 4 but also Anatomie eines Falls (Amazon Prime) and Madame Web (Netflix).
In Role Play, Kaley Cuoco (known from The Big Bang Theory) stars as an assassin leading a dangerous double life. She keeps this perilous lifestyle a secret from her husband. However, when her identity is at risk of being exposed, she is ready to do anything to protect her family. The film portrays her struggles of being both a deadly assassin and a loving wife.
Despite the high viewership, critics haven’t been very kind to Role Play. Only 26% of critics recommend the film, whereas viewers have shown a bit more leniency with a 43% approval rating. Although it hasn’t fared well with critics, it has garnered a slightly more positive reception among general audiences.
The film’s immense popularity can be attributed to the audience’s curiosity for new action-comedies and Amazon Prime Video’s effective promotion strategy. Role Play has become a significant hit for now. Whether this success will be long-lasting or a brief surge remains to be seen. But for the moment, Role Play has managed to captivate its audience.
